Beacons Squad Update – February 2018
Since the last story, our squad girls have been doing better and better! Beacons 1 are currently mid-table in their division and having a very strong season. They have won 5 out of there 11 games and only narrowly missing out on losses, which is a fantastic achievement as they were promoted last year.
The 2nd team are 3rd in their division having won 6 out of their 10 games played, they are pushing hard and hoping to get into the top 2 places for a promotion next season. Beacons 3 are currently sitting top of the table yay! They have won all of their games played and done so convincingly, we are on a great road to promotion! Keep up the good work 3s!
The 4ths are having a much stronger second half to their season and are aiming to climb up their division over the last few games. Beacons 5 are currently sitting in 3rd place as well and will be pushing to get in top 2 positions for promotion.
All in all, we are having a great season and with only a few games left we will be pushing on to make sure we finish strong and get some promotions!
Beacons vs Eclipse Local Derby Matches
On Wednesday 21st February we invited a local team Eclipse, to come down to our Wednesday Dulwich training Academy and play a game against our Year 7s and 8s. We had already played a friendly against Eclipse last year with a mixed team from both Academies and they enjoyed it so much they came back again! Eclipse brought along 2 teams, this meant out Year 7s played against the U12 team and the Year 8s played against the U14 team.
Having won the U12 game previously and lost the U14 game it was all to play for. The U12 team had a shaky start losing the first quarter 4-1, but with a shift around we were fighting back in the 2nd quarter and ended halftime 9-6 to Eclipse. We struggled to get the ball into the shooters which meant, unfortunately, we lost this game 15-8. The girls fought right until the very end and we witnessed some lovely match play. The U14s game was well contested from the off, some lovely netball was played and Beacons were defending brilliantly, we finished half time 7-6 up! It was a tense second half but our shooters worked tirelessly to get into a good position to pop the shot in which meant we finished the game 15-10 to Beacons!
All the girls put in a great performance which made it really hard to pick a player of the match for either team. Special mention to Belle, Millie Lottie and Nina for their great performances in the first match as well as Frieda and Monika in the 2nd match. We were amazed by the improvement from the girls and were delighted to see how well they conducted themselves during match play.
On Wednesday 7th February we had our first Yr 7 and 8 inter-academy matches! We invited a Yr 7 and 8 team from our Lewisham Academies to come and play against a Yr 7 and 8 team from our Dulwich Academy. Both games were closely contested, the teams gave everything they had until the final whistle and the final scores for each match were;
Yr 7 Match – 8-7 to Lewisham
Yr 8 Match – 12-10 to Dulwich.
Players of the match were awarded to Solene and Lois from Dulwich and Paige and Nell from Lewisham. It was a great evening with lots of great netball played and 2 fantastic games to watch for parents and coaches. We are so lucky at Beacons to have such talented girls in both our Academies.
On Sunday 4th February, Beacons were invited to play in a friendly game against a local team U12 team, Raiders. This was due to Raiders hosting a team from Grenada who would later play against there senior team, as well as some other local teams.
We took two teams of mixed Yr5&6’s. We had a fantastic afternoon of netball and I was really impressed with the determination of our players. We narrowly lost the first game despite a strong come back in the second half and won the second game convincingly! It was a great opportunity to see the girls in action and I hope they all enjoyed the opportunity to compete as well as some girls staying to watch the games after which were a great watch.
Players of the matches were awarded to Zara and Ursula! Well done to everyone who took part!
Return of the Beacons Winter Workshops
The end of another year saw the return of our winter workshops, we had a very exciting and successful school holidays with 4 workshops taking place.
We have had the pleasure of coaching over 100 girls across these workshops, including returning members and lots of new faces. During our workshop days, we had mini-workshops on attacking, defending, shooting and even footwork and landing skills. We also played a few Christmasy netball related games which all the girls jumped right into and all seemed to really enjoy, especially the snowman game! We managed to get in lots of match play which as we all know is the players favourite part of the day and they all put the skills they had learnt during the day into the match play which was fantastic to see.
We look forward to the workshops in the February Half Term and Easter Holidays!
